We had a little extra room between the tub and toilet and were able to install this Aker SBF 32x60 x 20 inch deep soaking tub. Code clearance is 12" from bath tub to center line of toilet. I have this same tiled front tub in my home and feel it is the best small bathroom tub choice. The tub is deep, comfortable and the tiled front skirt is a very nice custom touch without a lot of added expense. Due to the height of the bath tub, installing a shower door can make the step in, a "hurdle". Best to use a shower curtain. Lots of recessed shower storage with a hand held to also make cleaning very easy.

While you have your electrician in your bathroom have them wire a GFI outlet inside of your vanity to plug in your hair dryer or curling iron. Then mount a hair dryer holder on the inside of the cabinet door. A vanity top could also have a cord hole for appliances to be plugged in inside the vanity instead of on top. Hair dryer stands can hold your hair dryer for you.

Evan Daniels is doing the final tile wipe down on a small Schluter mud set shower pan with Granite Luna Pearl sills and seat. Tile is Daltile Navelli Carrera Star NV01 10x13 field on walls with Daltile Sonterra SR87 1" glass tiles in a roped border. Shower pan is a 2" octagon with 1" mosaic pattern. Burke Luxury Small Bathroom Remodeling

Notice all diagonal tile cuts are full halves. The bathroom remodeling picture above consists of a 20" deep 32"x60" Jacuzzi Cetra tub / shower combination. Picture framed tile design is Daltile Salerno 81 Nubi Bianche 6x6 on diagonal with glass tile accents and glass band SL86 Smoky Topaz.

Shower valve and shower head is the nicest finish I've seen on a plumbing valve. The bathroom valves are the Kohler "Finial Tradition" series in a Vibrant Brushed Bronze finish. Nice warm coppery tone and beautiful shape.

Above are pictures of my design of a small 5 ft x 8 ft bathroom remodeled into a shower only bathroom with seating, recessed can lighting, window (option), Kohler clear frameless shower door, large hidden shampoo shelf, diagonal ceramic tile floor, under floor heating, ADA toilet elongated, granite tile inserts in accent strip and dual shower heads, including handheld (cleaning) above seat. The bathroom remodeling trend is "one tub in a home is sufficient", as most people take showers. This shower design is somewhat of a cross between a tub and a shower as a person can sit and rest to bathe or shave their legs. Grab bars could easily be added for handicapped or elderly people.

Tile, Granite, Marble Choices

Toilets are a glazed or fired surface that is a glass type surface, non porous, easy to clean (no abrasives) and sanitary. Most ceramic and porcelain tiles have a fired surface that can be very smooth and non porous depending on the substrate texture before glazing. Some floor tiles are made with traction in mind, hence are rough before firing and may be hard to keep clean on shower walls. Some wall tiles are high gloss and smooth for easy cleaning (like a toilet surface). Generally the dirt in a shower that attaches to floor and walls is pale beige in color. Black or dark tile with a rough texture would not be a good choice for color.

Granite and marble are both porous natural materials. Granite is substantially harder than marble and also impervious to acids or household cleaning chemicals. Marble on the other hand is very soft, scratches easily and can be easily damaged with acids or household chemicals. Slate would be hard to keep clean in a shower.

Pictured above is brown onyx tile with a 2 minute lemon juice and vinegar test. Notice the lemon juice area in the center with finish sheen removed and now dull. The vinegar is less strong (above).The scratches were done with my car keys. Home improvement stores don't sell readymade vanity tops made of marble, only granite or synthetic materials.

 

Tub choices

Jacuzzi Cetra whirlpool bath tub and Aker SBF3260 (3 tile flanges). Both 20" deep

Bathroom tubs normally range from 5 ft to 6 ft long and 30" to 42" wide. There are also units smaller, bigger and in varying shapes. A Standard tub is 5 ft x 30". Tubs are made of steel (thin inexpensive), caste iron (heavy, not big or deep) and fiberglass ( most common today). I generally install Aker, Jacuzzi or Kohler fiberglass tubs. Once in a while a Kohler Villager caste iron. Aker is not a name brand but has good quality and price. A lot of times a standard 60x30 tub can be replaced with a 60x32 provided a clearance of 12" from front edge to center line of toilet is maintained. It is best to use a tub that has 3 integral tile flanges to replace you tub, but a less desirable tile flange kit can also be used.

If you have the room for a 5'6" or 6' tub, go for it. I like a tub 36" or less wide as it takes less time and water to fill. If it all possible sit in the tub you are considering buying. Other wise its like buying a car without driving it. I like a gently sloped rather than steep back. Another thing to consider with whirlpool tub purchases is minimum water requirements before jets can be started. On the one end are tubs that are “body fit” or contoured to save the amount of water needed in order to turn the jets on. On the other end are these very large corner tubs that are uncomfortable, too big for one person, need lots of water to operate and possibly two water heaters to fill them.

Shower base, pan or receptor choices

Mud set- most expensive, must be installed properly,looks nice to begin with, high maintenance. $1500 and up.

Acrylic shower base- Easy to clean, much less expensive than mud set. Use no abrasives! Soft Scrub included. $300-$800 Specific sizes

Fiberglass pan- Easy to clean, slightly less expensive than acrylic. Use no abrasives! Soft Scrub included.$250-$500 Specific sizes

Cast Iron shower receptors- Heavy 175-220 lbs. Feels firm on your feet. Use no abrasives! Soft Scrub included.$500-$900 Specific sizes

About available sizes

Different manufacturers vary in their production of specific sizes. In a situation of replacing a standard 60x30 tub with a shower pan, a 60x32 pan can be used if the front edge of the pan is not closer than 12" to the center line of the toilet. I like to max the size of the pan as able. A 60x36 pan is largest pan produced, but you have to consider clearances. To convert a standard tub to a shower pan with seat, a 48x32 is probably the best choice.

Aker bathroom shower pans, Kohler Memoirs acrylic base, Kohler Salient cast iron K-9056 (nice swirl floor pattern but only 60x36, center drain though), get the Kohler K-9132 in your finish for the nicest drain available.

Frameless shower doors

A light on each side of your mirror to light your face from the sides. Dual sconces for theatrical lighting for your "vanity".

A quiet high volume bathroom fan for humidity, 110 cfm 1.8 sones.

Toto Drake elongated. Kohler Cimarron round front "comfort height (ADA)". You may want round front for smaller bathrooms. Home Depot Toilets and Lowe's Toilets. An ADA height elongated toilet with a decent flush rate of 500 grams or better. Toilet Flush Ratings and ADA Accessibility Guidelines. Alphabetical Toilet Flush Ratings, notice Kohler Welworth EL and Glacier Bay substandard flush rates.

Off the shelf granite top with under mount sink. Great looks and value($250single-$550 double bowl). I don't recommend marble for your bathroom or kitchen. It tends to be too soft and marks easily. Pay attention to holes cut in top for faucet, either 4" centers or "wide spread", different faucets to buy. May need side splash(s), sold separate. Home Depot Granite tops.

Bath or lavatory faucets come in at various price levels. I like Moen products or the other major brands. Try to stay away from inexpensive bathroom faucets as they tend not to last. Lowe's Bath Faucets and Home Depot Bath Faucets. Dark finishes water spot easily, brushed nickel or pewter is current trend.

The same goes for bathroom shower or tub valves as stated above. Moen shower valves Brushed or Chrome. Roman tub fillers fill tubs much faster as they are ported bigger. Moen Roman Tub fillers Brushed or Chrome. Your water line size and pressure to your bathroom enters into fill rates. It takes a long time to fill a large bath tub with a standard tub valve. Lowe's tub/shower and HD tub/shower

Kraftmaid Bathroom Vanities and bath cabinet sizes. Vanity counter height used to be 30" high but now cabinets with tops tend to be around 34" in height. This is easier on a person's back. I recommend bathroom vanity cabinets with wood sides vs particle board sides as the high humidity in the bath tends to cause the particle board to expand and "blow up". In your "standard 5x8 bath" go with a 30"W x 33 1/2"H x 21"D vanity with drawers to the side away from the bathroom door. Home Depot Vanities and Lowe's Vanities. Strasser woodworks.

Picture of a shoulder height window in your shower area. Or maybe skylight over the shower. Seeing outside is a great return on investment.

Seat in the bathroom shower area with extra shower valve and hand held spray. You have less of a tendency to fall over washing your feet. Women for shaving. Hand held to rinse and clean shower. Of safety value to the elderly for bathing. Don't have to get all the way down or up out of a tub and can sit at chair height to take a shower.

Many quality bathroom remodeling supplies must be ordered and are not stocked by local suppliers. They may include the tub, toilet, vanity, shower valves, faucets, shower door or ceramic tile. Lead time is needed as well as planning to make sure the item will work for the intended application. Will it be what you want and will it fit. These things need to be gone over with your bathroom remodeling contractor before you order the item.
